Just under two hours later I was at Vauxhall to see Battle of Britain No.34067 'Tangmere' on it's way to Faversham. A nice way to start the working day! 'Doll' was the only engine in steam but various diesels (and petrols!) were in action at both ends of the line. At Stonehenge some of the diesels/petrols were seen shunting the sand skips that were used to carry the sand. All in all, an interesting visit. In the end it turned out to be a home fleet event and during my visit the trains were packed solid. The main focus of attention for me was to get my first sighting of the newly restored Bulleid Pacific No.34059, the first Re-built 'Battle of Britain' in service in the preservation era. The line-up was, 34059 'SIR ARCHIBALD SINCLAIR', Maunsell 'U' 2-6-0, No.1638, GWR "Dukedog" 4-4-0, No.9017 and BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T, No.80151. Also in action giving brake van rides was A1X "Terrier" 0-6-0T, No.72 "FENCHURCH". During my visit the weather started off with pouring rain, but eventually in late afternoon the sun did come out. A class 31 and 37 as well as the line's single car DMU were also planned to be in use. However, both the class 31 and 37 were not available on the day so that in the end it was just 9682 and the DMU in action. Although not strictly in keeping with this gallery I thought it would be of interest to some. In the cramped confines of the museum most shots were taken on a wide angle lens and with a flash. Neither are things I usually do but it seems to have worked reasonably well. This year it was entitled 'The Heavy Metal Show' based on the fact that joining resident 8F 2-8-0 No.48305 and O4 7F No.63601 were 9F 2-10-0 No.92203 from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway and WD 8F 2-8-0 No.90733 from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. Also appearing were 7MT 4-6-2 No.70013 'Oliver Cromwell', N15 4-6-0 No.30777 'Sir Lamiel', 4MT 2-6-4T No.42085 and 2MT 2-6-0 No.78019. 78019 failed on Friday which brought 30777 into the gala, however, 78019 was repaired and worked from Saturday afternoon. I spent over 11 hours at the gala from arriving to see the locos prepared on shed at Loughborough until the first ones were back on shed in the evening and seeing the last departures of the day. The now usual intensive service, that only a double track railway can offer, worked really well with much to keep people interested. This meant a rapid re-write of the timetable and because of the loss of Hampton Loade as a passing point three visiting diesels did not attend. However, the last minute arrangements worked well with a successful gala taking place. The diesels in action were as follows; from the home fleet, Class 20 No.D8188 in non-authentic black livery, Class 37 No.37906, Class 42 'Warship' D821 returning to traffic for the first time in over 4 years, Class 50's D444 and 50135 both in non-authentic liveries, Class 52 'Westerns' Nos. D1013 and D1062 with D1013 making it's last runs prior to overhaul including a major re-wire which will see it out of service for many years, and Electro-Diesel Class 73 No.73006. The visitors were, Class 20 No.D8059, Class 37 No.37264 and Class 47 No.47580. A shunter shuttle and a DMU service also operated. This year the emphasis was on smaller locos as opposed to the big 'superstars' of the steam world. However, the line-up was still one of great interest. From the home fleet there was the former Port Talbot Railway 0-6-0ST No.813, 5101 class 2-6-2T No.5164, 5700 class 0-6-0PT No.5764 and 'Manor' 4-6-0 No.7812 'Erlestoke Manor'. The non-GWR residents included Stanier 5MT 2-6-0 No.42968, Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 No.46443 and the gala saw the return to traffic after overhaul of Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 No.43106 which had been out of use for over 20 years! The visitors were Ivatt 2MT 2-6-2T No.41241 from The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, N2 0-6-2T No.1744 from The Great Central Railway, 5600 class 0-6-2T No.5643 from The Llangollen Railway and Hall 4-6-0 No.4936 'Kinlet Hall' from Tyseley. The two special guests just for the gala were Class 50, No.50007 'SIR EDWARD ELGAR' and former GCR resident, 'Deltic', Class 55 No.55019 'ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIER'. Also in action on the dining train was Robinson Class 'O4', 2-8-0 No.63601. The day was blessed with wall to wall sunshine which helped make for an excellent day. Once again a railway where most of the trains appeared reasonably well filled. This is definitely an under rated line that lives with the problem of being mainly surrounded by housing estates. However, it does have a good section where it runs through open countryside. The Stonehenge end of the line continues to see improvements made and the shed yard there has just been re-laid. The pair hadn't been in action together since 1959 when they were retired from Bilston Steel Works near Wolverhampton. The evening session also featured Orenstein & Koppel built 0-4-0WT "P.C.ALLEN", Baldwin 4-6-0T No.778, Baguley built 0-4-0T "RISHRA" and Henschel 0-8-0T No.1091. I attended the evening photo shoot where all the locos were posed outside the shed at Pages Park. I'm not aware of too many locations around these parts as there isn't usually much to see. In the end I decided to try and get a pan shot of 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' with support coach on it's way from Hornsey to York. This was my first effort at capturing steam on the main line with a pan shot and while it's not great, it's a start. Monday 24 August 2009: A rare chance to see steam on the southern part of the WCML and on my doorstep was too good an opportunity to miss. I'm not aware of too many locations around these parts as there isn't usually much to see. In the end I decided to try and get a pan shot of 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' with support coach on it's way from Hornsey to York. 70013 'OLIVER CROMWELL' heads north along the WCML near Grove Farm south of Leighton Buzzard. With only it's support coach in tow 70013 was on route from Hornsey to York in readiness for working 'The Scarborough Spa Express' the next day.

I had two main ambitions for the week. One was to see 76079 on 'The Cambrian' crossing Barmouth bridge and the other was to sample the Welsh Highland Railway. Fortunately both goals were achieved, however, my photographic record of the Welsh Highland is poor as a result of torrential rain as soon as we boarded the train which lasted for the remainder of the day. During the course of the week we visited the Bala Lake Railway, the Ffestiniog Railway, the Talyllyn Railway, the Snowdon Mountain Railway, the previously mentioned Welsh Highland Railway as well as seeing 76079 at work on three days. A couple of other brief encounters with the Ffestiniog Railway were also possible. Fortunately my women were quite happy to visit all the narrow gauge lines making it an excellent week! The problem was that the clouds turned up everytime a steam hauled train went past and this seemed to be the big topic at the lineside. Nonetheless, a well organised event that ran pretty much to time throughout the day. The following locos were in action.
